How to register a domain name for free
Learn how to register a domain name for free.
Before I start, the following method is only for registering .tk, .ml, .ga, .cf, or .gq domain name. I recommend paying for .com domain name. Here’s how to choose the best domain name registrar. You can compare the prices of different registrars here.
Beware that since it’s free, the domain name can be taken down anytime. These domains are also being used by spammers.
Choose a suitable domain name
First, list down all the possible domain name that you would want. This is so that you have a backup in case your domain name is taken. Some people have a combination of their name and surname like I do. Others like to have their nickname or their own personal branding. You can choose whatever you like.
Search for your domain name
Go to freenom website. Type in your first choice in the search bar and click search availability. In this example I use tehhijau. You can see that all of the free domain extensions are available. Don’t click the get it now button. I found that when clicking the get it now button doesn’t work.
Pick your domain name
Next, pick which domain extension you would like to use. Once you’ve decided, type in your domain name again in the search bar but this time include the domain extension. The domain name you’ve chosen is now selected and is put in the shopping cart. Click the checkout button to go to the shopping cart.
Review & Checkout
In the shopping cart page, you can choose the period of your registration up to 12 months for free. You need to pay if you want to register the domain name for more than a year. Don’t worry, you can renew again for free after 1 year if you choose the 12 months period. Click continue.
Type in your email address to verify your registration. Use a gmail account for the email address as it seems that freenom doesn’t accept other email adresses. I’ve tried with hotmail but it said that a user already exists with that email account even though it’s my first time registering with that email. Click verify my email address and a verification link will be sent to your email address.
Verify email address
Go to your email and there will be an email from freenom in your inbox with a verification link. Click the verification link to verify your email.
Enter you details
Fill in your name, address and password to complete your registration. That’s it! You now have your domain name.
